Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to common questions about starting therapy, booking, Vårdval and the practical side of sessions.

Questions and answers

How it works
How do I book a session?
You book directly in the booking system, or get in touch by phone, text message or email. I will come back to you as soon as I can.
What happens in the first session?
We talk about what you are seeking help for, what your situation looks like and what you would like to change. You do not need to have put the problem into words – we start where you are.
How do we plan the treatment?
After the first session we find a way forward that suits you. We evaluate together as we go.
Before your first session
Do I need to know exactly what I want help with?
No. Many people who get in touch only know that something does not feel right. Together we find what could help.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
It is completely fine not to know that when you get in touch. In the first session we go through your needs, and then we can see together whether it feels right.
Do I need to prepare anything for the first session?
No special preparation is needed. It is enough that you come as you are.
Practical details
How long is a session?
The standard length for private individual sessions is 45 minutes. You can also book 60 minutes if you would like more time. For couples therapy the standard length is 60 minutes, with the option of booking 75 minutes. Within Region Skåne's Vårdval Psykoterapi, sessions are 45 minutes.
Can I book a shorter phone call first?
Yes. If you have a short question or are unsure whether therapy is right for you, you can book a 15-minute telephone consultation for SEK 350.
How often do we meet and how long is a course of therapy?
It is common to meet every week or every other week, but I adapt to you. Some people need only a few sessions, others work over a longer period. We evaluate together as we go.
What is the difference between CBT and psychodynamic therapy?
In CBT we work concretely with patterns in thoughts, feelings and behaviours. In psychodynamic therapy we explore emotions, relationships and earlier experiences. Read more about CBT and psychodynamic therapy.
Can I have therapy digitally?
Private psychotherapy can take place digitally from the first session. Within Vårdval, at least three of the first four sessions must be physical visits at the practice; after that digital sessions are possible.
What applies if I need to cancel?
Cancellations need to be made no later than 24 hours before the appointment. For later cancellations or missed visits, the full price of the booked time is charged privately, and SEK 400 within Vårdval.
How do confidentiality and patient records work?
As a psychologist I have a duty of confidentiality. That means what you tell me stays between us, with a few exceptions under the law, for example if I suspect that a child is being harmed.

I write a record after our sessions. It is stored securely and kept for at least ten years.
Where is the practice?
We meet at S:t Johannesgatan 2 in Malmö. See address and map.
Vårdval
Can I book privately without a referral?
Yes, private psychotherapy does not require a referral. You contact me directly and pay for the treatment yourself.
How does Vårdval Psykoterapi work and do I need a referral?
You turn to the health centre where you are registered, where a doctor or psychologist makes an assessment. If treatment is relevant, a referral is written and you can then choose a psychotherapy practice.
Can I have couples therapy through Vårdval?
No, couples therapy with me is private and is not part of Vårdval Psykoterapi.
Can I choose or change practice?
You choose yourself which Vårdval Psykoterapi practice you want to turn to, and you can change practice if you wish. This applies before the fifth session.
About therapy
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a talking treatment where we talk together about what you want to change. It can involve thoughts, feelings, behaviours, relationships or life situations.
Why should I choose a licensed psychologist?
Seeing a licensed psychologist is a quality guarantee. Unlike a coach or conversational therapist, licensed psychologist is a protected title. To use the title requires a degree from a five-year university programme, followed by one year of practical service for psychologists (PTP) before applying for a licence from the National Board of Health and Welfare. The licence guarantees that the psychologist works according to science and proven experience, is under state supervision and follows the Patient Safety Act, confidentiality rules and ethical guidelines.
If you are not satisfied
You can contact Patientnämnden Skåne if you want help giving feedback or making a complaint about care. Here you can read more about how to proceed: If you are not satisfied with care – Region Skåne.
Do I have to feel very unwell to start therapy?
No. Many people come because something keeps chafing or returning, without it being a crisis. There is no lower limit for when it is okay to seek help.
What is expected of me in therapy?
That you come to the sessions and speak as honestly as you can. Some treatments include trying things out between sessions. You always set the pace and decide what you want to bring up.
Can it feel harder before it gets better?
Sometimes. Talking about difficult things can stir up emotions. It usually passes, and we adjust the pace if something becomes too much. Do tell me if a session feels wrong.
Can I end therapy whenever I want?
Yes. Therapy is voluntary and you decide when to end it. A closing session where we sum things up is often valuable.
Can I be in therapy while taking medication?
Yes, that is fine. Psychotherapy and medication are often combined. I do not prescribe medication – your doctor does.
